Musical Director

A bit about Steve

Steve grew up in Kippax, a mining village in West Yorkshire. He started playing the Cornet at the age of 11 and was taught by Norman Morley who conducted Kippax Band at that time. Norman had played with the famous St Hilda’s Band in the early days but went on to conduct Kippax and taught some very good players over the years. Steve progressed to Principal Cornet and held the position for several years before taking up the Principal seat at The Yorkshire Volunteers Band a position he held for over 10 years.

Steve moved to Scarborough in 1984 and still travelled back to Pontefract where the Yorkshire Volunteers Band was based. Regularly playing for Royalty and Army functions all over the country and also having some great trips abroad.
Steve played for most of the Kings Regiment Bands depping for them as the regular Army Bands were being cut back at that time.

Steve decided to take some time out from banding and spend time with his family and he stopped playing for a number of years.  One day walking through Scarborough, Steve bumped into a fellow Kippax player who had also moved to Scarborough, Tony Spencer. Tony said to Steve “Do you fancy setting a band up in Scarborough?”  After some thought Steve said yes and Simply Brass was formed in the year 2000, initially with 4 players. The band grew in numbers over the years and now boasts 30 players and Steve played and conducted them over this period until recently stepping down for pastures new.

Steve is looking forward to his time with Swinton & District Excelsior Band and is keen to build on the success of previous Musical Directors, creating a band that can progress in standard, enjoy playing music and entertain our audiences
