About Swinton & District Excelsior Band
Swinton & District Excelsior Band is proudly based in Swinton, a village near Malton in North Yorkshire. Founded in 1936 by a group of former bandsmen eager to revive their musical passion, the band’s first performances took place over Christmas, raising funds for instruments and music.
Today, we are a thriving community band with around 30 playing members in the main band, plus a learners’ band of 20+ enthusiastic musicians. Our members range from primary school children to those in their 70s and 80s, all united by a love of brass music. Many of our younger players continue their musical journey at university and beyond, joining bands across the UK and internationally.

Training and Development
We welcome learners of all ages and abilities, offering:
🎺 Free instrument loans
🎺 Free lessons with experienced musicians
🎺 Opportunities to perform in concerts and social events
We also hold workshops where both the main band and training band come together to develop skills and enjoy making music.
Social Activities
Music is at the heart of what we do, but we also love to have fun! We organise a variety of social events throughout the year, including:
- Annual presentation evening
- Trips to the beach
- Meals out & great days out
It’s a great way for our members to bond and make lifelong friendships.
